Using Writing Games to Help Kids Learn

2011

When you use writing games for kidsto help them enjoy learning, you’re building the bond between children and language that will last for years to come. The more fun children have while learning, the less intimidating the topic becomes.

Using written language to express ideas is a critical component of doing well in school. It’s also a skill some kids struggle with a great deal. Those kids could benefit from game style lessons that almost “trick” them into learning. They’ll be having so much fun they won’t realize they’re mastering necessary skills at the same time.

There are lots of ways to turn writing into a game. Take a class of children outside for a walk and have each of them pick one thing to describe in a written paragraph. Play a short video clip without the audio and have kids make up a story to go with the video. Have children take turns adding a sentence to a story that grows as the paper moves from child to child.

Learning doesn’t have to be hard. It can be fun. Use writing games to help children enjoy their time at school and you’ll have stronger, lifetime learners.

Before authoring the world famous books The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand lived in California where she hoped to become a screenwriter. After meeting a famous hollywood director, Ayn ironically served as an extra in a christian movie. On set, she met Frank O’Connor, a man she fell in love with and stayed married to for the remainder of her life. Ayn soon sharpened her skills as a writer and release her first book in the U.S., Anthem. The book was nearly a complete flop as most young and idealistic Americans were pro-communist at the time. Ayn was not dissuaded, though. Two years after Anthem Ayn began work on her most famous book – The Fountainhead. Many people were fascinated with Rand’s lead character Howard Roark because he fully embodied the self important and arrogant style favored by Americans. To this day, The Fountainhead continues to make it onto best seller lists and retails hundreds of thousands of copies every year.
